Red kuri squash belongs to hubbarda squash group (often spelled 'kari'). It has appearance of a small pumpkin without ridges. It's outer skin is orange in colour.Inside the outer skin there is a delicate and mellow chestnut-like flavoured flesh which is very firm. It is also called orange Hokkaido squash.
Most of the squash are believed to be cultivated in Mesoamerica, but they may have also originated independently from everywhere.
The word kuri may refer to either the squash or to Japanese chestnuts .Most commonly red kuri is called "Japanese squash". In France and United Kingdom, it is commonly called "potimarron", and "onion squash" respectively.
