GLOSSARY TERMS - 'S'
A seed is the ripened ovule of gymnosperm and angiosperm plants. The importance of the seed relative to more primitive forms of reproduction or dispersal is attested to by the success of these two groups of plants in the dominating the landscape.
Angiosperm plants are a taxonomic class whose seeds are surrounded by the ovule. The trees have broad leaves that change color and die every autumn. Ex: Oaks, maples and dogwoods. Some angiosperms that hold their leaves ex: rhododendron, live oak, and sweetbay magnolia.
Gymnosperm ("naked seed") plants are a taxonomic class whose seeds are not enclosed in an ovule. The plants have needles that stay green throughout the year. ex: pines, cedars, spruces and firs. Some gymnosperms do drop their leaves ex: ginkgo, dawn redwood, and baldcypress.
Simple fruits can be either dry or fleshy and result from the ripening of a simple or compound ovary with only one pistil. Dry fruits might be either dehiscent (opening to discharge seeds), or indehiscent (not opening to discharge seeds).
Simple fleshy fruits are often edible. They are seen in the fresh fruit and vegetable section of your local super market. Ex: the berry, drupe, pome, pepo, and hesperidium.
Dry dehiscent fruits crack open along two seams. They shed their seeds into the environment when the fruit is ripe.
Dry indehiscent fruits retain their seeds and do not crack open after ripening.
Fruits also known as drupes - with one or more seeds surrounded by fleshy, normally edible tissue. They are often in the genus Prunes. Example: apricots, plums, cherries and mangoes.
